ABSTRACT

While intelligent systems are replacing many work positions thus leading to critical societal challenges, on the other side natural interfaces, currently exploited in AR together with new sensing systems and data elaboration, have attracted the interest of both engineering and neuroscience having the potential to restore the centrality of the human role in several applications of Industry 4.0 ranging from smart manufacturing, collaborative robotics, location-based support for mobile devices, to assistance for industrial maintenance such as inspection, diagnostics and simulation.
Such systems comprise a wide pool of new sensing technologies such as 3D ToF cameras, eye tracking, wearable sensors just to cite a few and new data elaboration hardware/techniques such as Deep Neural Networks and Pattern Recognition able to provide real time feedback to the operator despite huge quantities of data to process.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZER

Research fields. Measurements: physical/cognitive assessment during rehabilitation procedures, optomechanical sensors, position and attitude estimation systems and algorithms for Autonomous Guided Vehicles - AGV, colorimetric analysis, diagnostic systems and elaboration, vision systems for 3D shape or motion estimation, human motion estimation by Structure From Motion – SfM, system identification, time-frequency analysis, SLAM by lidar. Robotics: non-holonomic systems path planning and control, adaptive control, Real-Time Multitasking control. Space: mechanisms design and qualification, automatic testing systems, hypervelocity impact systems.

Participation as reference person for the UNCAP H2020 project to develop serious games for physical and cognitive rehabilitation, VERITAS FP7 IP project to develop measurement systems for human motion and dexterity assessment and for the AGILE Eurostars EU project to develop objects localization and reaching methods for mobile robotics. He is Co. Investigator of OSIRIS “Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System” payload (ROSETTA – ESA Cornerstone Mission, l.t. February 2003). Participates to the group LISA TEAM (LISA - ESA Cornerstone Mission, l.t. 2011). He is co-proposer and member of the steering committee of the autonomous province of Trento project AUSILIA. The project foresee the realization of a domotic apartment and a laboratory of design and testing of new devices and architectural solutions for the customization of living environments for users with physical and/or cognitive impairments.

In 2012 he co-founded Robosense, a startup company of the University of Trento, whose goal is to develop industrial quality control and robotics systems. In particular, the main products of Robosense are the Pallet Finder, an innovative object recognition and reaching system for mobile robotics in industrial environments and RoboAir, an innovative automatic checking of remaining objects within trays during the x-Ray check-in verification at international airports.

Referee of different international papers and congress, and of different national and international research projects. Author of more than 80 papers on international journal with referee, 3 book chapters, 49 papers on national or international congress with referee, H-index 22.
